YOUR TURN

Which intervention addresses an immediate need, and which would change the conditions reproducing the crisis?

Start with a question or a short observation. You do not need a complete argument to begin. Identify personal experiences as such; when making factual claims, add a dated source.

Documented starting point

The IPC alert of 12 October warns of growing famine risk in conflict-affected areas of Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan. It describes interacting pressures from conflict, displacement, drought, inadequate funding and restricted humanitarian access. A warning of famine risk must not be rewritten as a uniform famine classification for the entire country.

Analysis: explanations to examine

Follow the links between insecurity, lost agricultural production, markets, displacement and aid delivery. Consider which actors control access and what incentives sustain armed competition. A drought can intensify suffering without by itself explaining the origin or continuation of a war.

Stability and change: what to watch

Humanitarian access; local food prices; harvests; nutrition surveys; displacement; security of aid routes.

Limits and uncertainties

The alert covers specified areas and evidence periods. Conditions and classifications differ by locality; numbers and thresholds require their original definitions.

A demanding, respectful conversation.

Distinguish evidence, interpretation and preference. Challenge claims without insulting people. Do not publish threats, personal data, dehumanising attacks or calls for violence. Unsupported claims do not acquire equal evidential weight merely because they are another opinion.

Human rights abuses and atrocities can be investigated and explained without being justified. Do not equate a population with its government or an armed organisation.
