A history with more than one route

Steam, electricity and internal combustion offered different routes to self-propelled travel. The petrol automobile became a dominant industrial system through manufacturing, fuel supply, roads and repair networks. Mass production expanded access but also changed cities, labour and resource consumption. Contemporary electrification reopens questions about energy supply, materials and infrastructure.

The six vehicles below are an editorial selection, not a universal ranking of beauty. Suggest an everyday car, a coachbuilt body or a model from another country: automotive heritage includes more than expensive sports cars.

A foundational case in the history of purpose-built petrol automobiles. Earlier steam road vehicles and other experiments mean that the phrase “first car” needs a definition.

How it works · technical reading

Study the integration of engine, chassis and transmission rather than judging it against a modern car. A vehicle is an interconnected system: generating power is not enough without steering, braking and a usable structure.

The Gullwing belongs in this editorial selection for the relationship between engineering identity and sculptural form. Its distinctive door opening makes the architecture immediately recognisable.

How it works · technical reading

Evaluate access, sill height, visibility and body proportions together. A striking opening is not an isolated decoration: packaging and structural design constrain how occupants enter a car. Compare the museum record before generalising specifications across SL generations.

A long bonnet and compact passenger compartment make its proportions a useful starting point for discussing beauty. The Jaguar heritage archive connects the model with the engineering experience of competition cars.

How it works · technical reading

Read the body as an interaction of aerodynamic shaping, engine packaging and structural design. Malcolm Sayer is central to the aerodynamic story; development was a team effort. Different series changed details, so a photograph needs a date and version.

Included for its synthesis of racing purpose and visual coherence. Ferrari records its introduction in 1962 and its competition achievements; those facts are separate from the editorial judgement that it is beautiful.

How it works · technical reading

Cooling openings, wheel clearance and body shape respond to operating requirements. When comparing examples, identify the body configuration and history rather than assuming every car is identical. A rare model’s auction price is not a measurement of engineering quality or cultural value.

A case study in recognisable design evolving over successive generations. The original car was presented as the 901 before the 911 name became established. Continuity does not mean that the engineering stayed unchanged.

How it works · technical reading

Rear-engine packaging influences mass distribution and available space. Tyres, suspension geometry, wheelbase and electronic systems affect handling; an engine location alone cannot explain how a particular generation behaves. Compare like-for-like versions.

Its low proportions and mid-engine layout helped establish a new visual language for high-performance road cars. This selection values the relationship between silhouette and mechanical arrangement, rather than claiming a universal ranking.

How it works · technical reading

The V12 installation behind the cabin changes packaging, cooling and weight distribution. A low roof and compact cabin create compromises in visibility, access and comfort. Beautiful design can be understood as a negotiation between constraints, not their disappearance.

Inside the machine

Engine, transmission and wheels

An internal-combustion engine converts part of the fuel’s chemical energy into mechanical work. In a four-stroke piston engine, intake, compression, power and exhaust form a cycle. The transmission trades rotational speed for torque; it does not create energy. An electric motor produces torque through magnetic interaction. Hybrids combine systems rather than escaping these physical principles.

US Department of Energy — Engine basics
Aerodynamics: why speed changes the problem

Drag force is approximately F = ½ ρ Cd A v². Here ρ is air density, Cd the drag coefficient, A the reference frontal area and v the relative air speed. With other terms fixed, doubling speed quadruples drag; the power needed to overcome it rises eightfold. A low coefficient alone is not enough: frontal area also matters. Real vehicles also face rolling resistance, gradients and acceleration.

NASA — Drag equation
Suspension, tyres and safety

Springs support the body and permit wheel movement; dampers dissipate oscillation energy. Geometry helps control tyre orientation as the suspension moves. Grip depends on the tyre, road and load, not simply on engine power. Brakes convert motion into heat; safe operation requires the whole system to remain appropriate to the vehicle.

Collectors: preserving an object and its history

A collection can preserve engineering, craftsmanship and social memory. The Schlumpf collection in Mulhouse provides a public example: its museum presents cars across several historical periods. A collection also raises questions about provenance, access and which everyday vehicles deserve preservation.

Conservation or restoration?

Conservation seeks to retain surviving material; restoration involves interventions intended to recover an earlier condition or function. The FIVA Charter of Turin provides a framework for preserving a vehicle’s technical, aesthetic and historical significance. Record the starting condition, evidence for decisions and any replacements. A new-looking finish is not automatically more historically valuable.

Axel Marx · Alfa Romeo heritage in Ticino

Dr Axel Marx is a vascular surgeon and a collector whose work focuses on the history of Alfa Romeo. The official Alfa Romeo account published in 2020 describes a collection spanning pre-war and post-war production, including the 6C 1500, 6C 1750 and different coachbuilt versions of the 1900. These cars offer a way to compare mechanical continuity with the choices of different body designers.

Collection Marx is associated with Mezzovico–Lugano, Switzerland. With Elisabetta Cozzi of the Museo Fratelli Cozzi, Marx developed culturAlfa, a project devoted to preserving and sharing the marque’s history. This is a useful example of collecting as research and cultural transmission, beyond rarity or market value.

What to look for in a coachbuilt Alfa Romeo

Compare proportions, rooflines, glazing, body construction and the relationship between body and underlying chassis. Distinguish the model specification from an individual vehicle’s documented history. Photographs and archive records are complementary evidence; an attractive restoration alone cannot establish originality.
